I have important news to share with you concerning bus transportation for your campus.
As you may know, this is a critical time for the Houston Independent School District. As a district, we’re continually being asked to do more with less. Not only are we required to send millions of our local tax dollars to the state, we’re also still trying to recover — physically and financially — from the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey.
Despite the challenges, we are still tasked with ensuring our students have the support they need to learn — no matter the district’s financial state. For Transportation Services, that includes a continued review of what we do well as well as what we need to improve upon to ensure we are offering the best and most efficient service to our students.
This review has led to the creation of a new magnet school transportation structure for the 2018-2019 school year. Beginning on the first day of school, August 27, 2018, all students enrolled in magnet programs will ride buses on routes solely designated to service magnet schools. These designated routes will pick up and drop off students at magnet hubs located strategically throughout the district.
Because your student is enrolled in a magnet program, he or she will be picked up and dropped off at magnet hub that is close to your home. Located at campuses throughout the district, hub stops were identified after a careful review of bus stop usage and a comprehensive look at traffic assessments. All hubs are located at schools with high visibility and strong safety reviews.
Please know that our primary focus continues to be providing all students with safe and reliable transportation to and from school. We believe this new plan will improve the on-time arrival rate for students, ensuring they are at school and ready to learn when the first bell rings.
I understand you may have some questions about where your hub stop will be located and how this new program will impact your student. I encourage you to review this map of all magnet hub locations so that you can familiarize yourself with the locations. As in previous years, you soon will receive a postcard with more information, including your assigned route and hub stop, as well as pick-up and drop-off times. Please be on the lookout for it.
