HISD Advocacy:  If you missed the May 1 budget workshop, you can watch it here.  The Board of Managers has a regular board meeting on May 8, and another budget workshop on May 22.  Board members have been urged to ask more questions of the superintendent about the budget.     

State Advocacy:  A private school voucher program has now been signed into law by Governor Abbott.  You can read more about it in a Texas Tribune article here.  Other bills are still making their way through the legislature, including HB4, which proposes a significant redesign of the Texas assessment and accountability system (which is currently heavily weighted towards STAAR testing).  The House and Senate still each have bills relating to public school funding.  Read more about pending legislation here.

The PTO Store has lots of open slots to fill! Join us for a shift or two. If it’s your first time volunteering, there are plenty of seasoned volunteers to show you the ropes. Please complete your VIPS registration and sign-up for volunteer shifts.

Heights Public Library would also like to share that they will be having their Summer Reading Program that allows youth of all ages (and grownups too!) to win prizes for the reading that they do during the summer. Registration will begin on May 16th, and reading tracking begins on June 1st. Our summer reading kickoff event is on Monday, June 9^th from 3-4:30 pm.
